Greek islands to sell<\/strong><\/p>\n

The news has been a bombshell. According to the Greek press this weekend, the emissaries of the European Union and International Monetary Fund have suggested the Greek government to “move the Islanders with less than 150 inhabitants to more accessible places.” A proposal publicly repeated by Kostas Mousouroulis, the Greek Minister of Maritime Affairs. The country has indeed a myriad of islands, many of which are close to the Turkish coast. Twenty-two of them are inhabited by fewer than 150 persons. Their operation, according to the minister, would “cost too expensive for the state.”<\/p>\n

Deportation<\/em><\/p>\n

Even contradicted this assumption is debatable. Christos Christopoulos, business lawyer, remains skeptical about the realization of the project, but asks: “What if in France we moved seven villagers of Ch\u00e2teauvieux-the-Fosse in the Doubs or those of ‘Aulan in Dr\u00f4me? Deportation of these people from their dwelling place, even under the pretext of non-profitability, wake past traumas to the Greeks. Moreover, it is legally impermissible and, finally, it would create serious risks to national security, “he says.<\/em><\/p>\n

Christos Christopoulos refers to the forced deportation of the Greek population of Asia Minor, where it had been since the dawn of time. After the defeat of the Greek troops from \u00a0Atat\u00fcrk in 1922, dropped also by the Allies, the Treaty of Lausanne, a year later, forced a “population exchange”. Nearly two million Greeks then had to leave what had been their homeland to settle in Greece, which had fewer than five million people at the time.<\/em><\/p>\n

A few weeks ago, the Greek press revealed the catalog of 47 islands and islets chosen by the coalition government in order to be sold to private investors. Leases 30, 40 or 50 years for amounts ranging from 3 to 45 million are suggested. This idea, set in 2010 by a German MP, had then raised a general indignation. This time, the Greeks destroyed by the rigor seem too stunned to react while the unemployment rate is more than 25% of the active population and the recession continues to plague the sixth consecutive year. Next week, Antonis Samaras, the Prime Minister should announce a new austerity measures to save 13.5 billion euros and receive in return for the payment of 31.5 billion euros with its creditors. \u00celLES GRECQUES A VENDRE<\/strong><\/p>\n

La nouvelle a fait l’effet d’une bombe. Selon la presse grecque de ce week-end, les \u00e9missaires de l’Union europ\u00e9enne et du\u00a0Fonds mon\u00e9taire international\u00a0auraient propos\u00e9 au gouvernement grec de “d\u00e9placer les habitants des \u00eeles comptant moins de 150 habitants vers des lieux plus accessibles”. Une proposition reprise publiquement par Kostas Mousouroulis, le ministre grec des Affaires maritimes. Le pays poss\u00e8de en effet une myriade d’\u00eeles, dont beaucoup sont proches des c\u00f4tes turques. Vingt-deux d’entre elles sont habit\u00e9es par moins de 150 habitants. Leur fonctionnement, selon le ministre, aurait un “co\u00fbt trop \u00e9lev\u00e9 pour l’\u00c9tat”.<\/p>\n

D\u00e9portation<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

M\u00eame d\u00e9mentie, cette hypoth\u00e8se fait d\u00e9bat. Christos Christopoulos, avocat d’affaires, reste sceptique sur la concr\u00e9tisation du projet, mais s’interroge : “Que dirait-on en\u00a0France<\/em>\u00a0si l’on d\u00e9pla\u00e7ait les sept habitants du village de Ch\u00e2teauvieux-les-Foss\u00e9s dans le Doubs ou ceux d’Aulan dans la Dr\u00f4me ? Cette d\u00e9portation de gens de leur lieu d’habitation, m\u00eame au pr\u00e9texte de non-rentabilit\u00e9, r\u00e9veille les traumatismes du pass\u00e9 pour les Grecs. De plus, cela est juridiquement inadmissible et, enfin, cela engendrerait de s\u00e9rieux risques pour la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 nationale”, affirme-t-il.<\/em><\/p>\n

Christos Christopoulos fait r\u00e9f\u00e9rence au d\u00e9placement de la population grecque d’Asie<\/em>\u00a0Mineure, o\u00f9 elle \u00e9tait install\u00e9e depuis la nuit des temps. Apr\u00e8s la d\u00e9faite des troupes grecques, l\u00e2ch\u00e9es par les alli\u00e9s face \u00e0 Atat\u00fcrk en 1922, le trait\u00e9 de Lausanne, un an plus tard, obligeait \u00e0 un “\u00e9change de population”. Pr\u00e8s de deux millions de Grecs avaient alors d\u00fb quitter ce qui avait toujours \u00e9t\u00e9 leur patrie pour s’installer en Gr\u00e8ce, qui comptait moins de cinq millions d’habitants \u00e0 l’\u00e9poque<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Il y a quelques semaines, la presse grecque d\u00e9voilait le catalogue de 47 \u00eeles et \u00eelots choisis par le gouvernement de coalition dans le but d’\u00eatre c\u00e9d\u00e9s \u00e0 des investisseurs priv\u00e9s. Des baux de 30, 40 ou 50 ans pour des montants allant de 3 \u00e0 45 millions sont sugg\u00e9r\u00e9s. Cette id\u00e9e, \u00e9nonc\u00e9e en 2010 par un d\u00e9put\u00e9 allemand, avait alors soulev\u00e9 une indignation g\u00e9n\u00e9rale. Cette fois, les Grecs, abattus par la rigueur, semblent trop t\u00e9tanis\u00e9s pour r\u00e9agir alors que le taux de ch\u00f4mage touche plus de 25 % de la population active et que la r\u00e9cession continue de s\u00e9vir pour la sixi\u00e8me ann\u00e9e cons\u00e9cutive. La semaine prochaine, Antonis Samaras, le Premier ministre, doit annoncer une nouvelle cure d’aust\u00e9rit\u00e9 pour \u00e9conomiser 13,5 milliards d’euros et recevoir en contrepartie le versement de 31,5 milliards d’euros par ses cr\u00e9anciers publics. Un blanc-seing indispensable au pays pour \u00e9viter la faillite.<\/p>\n
